Safety

Lightning Safety for High-Altitude Cycling

Essential lightning safety for GDMBR riders. Colorado's afternoon thunderstorms are a daily hazard above treeline from June through September.

🚴 Colorado afternoon thunderstorms are near-daily in summer and kill people every year. Plan to be below treeline by 1pm on exposed passes. If caught above treeline: get off ridges immediately, crouch low on balls of your feet, stay away from isolated trees and metal fences. Your bike is a lightning rod — lay it down 50+ feet away. The 30-30 rule: if thunder follows lightning by less than 30 seconds, take shelter; wait 30 minutes after last thunder. Indiana Pass (11,910 ft) and Boreas Pass (11,481 ft) are particularly exposed.
Safety

Moose Safety for Cyclists

Moose are more dangerous than bears on much of the GDMBR. Common in Montana, Wyoming, and Colorado creek bottoms.

🚴 Moose kill more people than bears in the Rockies and they're common on the GDMBR — especially in willowy creek bottoms and around lakes. Unlike bears, moose don't bluff charge: if one charges, it means it. Give them at least 25 yards. If a moose pins its ears back and the hackles on its neck rise, back away immediately. Put a tree between you and the moose. Never get between a cow and her calf. Bear spray works on moose too. Most encounters happen at dawn and dusk near water.
Safety

Heat & Sun Safety — Great Basin and Southern NM

Extreme heat and sun exposure are serious hazards in Wyoming's Great Divide Basin and southern New Mexico.

🚴 The Great Divide Basin and southern New Mexico can hit 100°F+ with zero shade for hours. Carry minimum 4 litres water capacity and know where your next source is. Ride early morning and late afternoon; shelter during midday heat. Wear sun protection and light-coloured clothing. Know heat exhaustion signs: heavy sweating, weakness, nausea, dizziness. If you stop sweating, that's heat stroke — a medical emergency. Electrolyte supplements are essential, not optional.
Safety

Hypothermia & Cold Weather Safety

Hypothermia is a real threat at altitude on the GDMBR, even in summer. Wet and windy conditions above 9,000 feet can be lethal.

🚴 Summer temperatures above 9,000 feet can drop below freezing overnight, and a wet rider descending a pass in wind can become hypothermic in minutes. Carry a wind/rain layer accessible at all times — not buried in your bags. Early signs: uncontrollable shivering, confusion, fumbling hands. If you can't stop shivering, get into dry layers and a sleeping bag immediately. Indiana Pass (11,910 ft), Boreas Pass (11,481 ft), and many Montana passes are particularly exposed. Montana passes can snow any month of the year.
Planning & Logistics

Bike Shipping & Transport to GDMBR Endpoints

Logistics for getting your bike to Banff or home from Antelope Wells. Shipping services, shuttles, and transport options.

🚴 BikeFlights and ShipBikes are the main shipping services. For Banff: fly into Calgary, shuttle with Banff Airporter or arrange pickup from Whitefish Bike Retreat. For Antelope Wells: most riders arrange a shuttle from Silver City or Lordsburg to El Paso or Tucson airports. The Bicycle Inn in Silver City sometimes coordinates group shuttles. Book transport before you start riding — options are limited and fill up fast during Tour Divide season in June.
